America - A Christian
Nation
This article is taken from "Twelve Powerful Prayers for America" by Steve Krotoski.
Looking at America’s founding, we see America was dedicated to God for His glory. America was founded as
a Christian nation. As George Washington, Jon Jay, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin and the founders of America
sought God, we also must seek Him today.
The Delaware Constitution required faith in God the Father, Jesus Christ, God’s Son, and the
Holy Spirit as a prerequisite to serve in public office. It also required government officials to state that they believed
the Scriptures of the Old and New Covenants were given by Divine inspiration. The Bible is inscribed in America’s government
buildings. There are crosses on our hills. Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is quoted on the Lincoln Memorial and
says, “this nation, under God…” Today, Congress has our national motto, “In God we trust”,
engraved above the Speaker of the House’s platform. Many have taken into hand to document America’s Christian
conception, founding and covenant to God.
George Washington said, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”
George Washington was an American. He followed God and the Bible.
The Bible was the first text book in American schools and the foundation
of education and American life. George Washington also said, “What children would learn in American schools above all
else is the religion of Jesus Christ”. Even the three branches of the United States of America government were taken
by our founders as they studied Isaiah 33:22.
John Adams, signer of the Declaration of Independence and second president, testified, “The Declaration
of Independence laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity.” Because our founders
followed God, God blessed America. Historical accounts show that our founders prayed and sought God together and God answered
them. This faith in God through Jesus Christ was how America fought, was protected and governed. The United States government
paid Christian chaplains for their services in government, starting with George Washington as president.
Abraham Lincoln followed the Bible’s teachings
and said, “But for it [the Bible] we could not know right from wrong.” So, how can anyone desiring to follow God
or our founders suggest removing the Bible from America? To do so, would go against our Constitution, America’s founders
and what they fought so hard for.
A Covenant Nation
Think again how God desires to bless America. However, God’s
Word shows only those who follow God’s ways can be blessed by God (Deuteronomy 28). God is a covenant God (Genesis 12:3).
There
is a difference between the clean and the unclean, and the holy and unholy (Ezekiel 22:26). There is a difference between
the righteous and the unrighteous (Psalm 11:5, Proverbs 10:30). Are we aware what these differences are (2 Timothy 3:16-17)?
The fact that God rewards a righteous nation and opposes an unrighteous nation is seen in Sodom and Gomorrah, Nineveh and
others (Psalm 33:12).
Our
covenant to follow God is most important. We see America’s dedication to following God is why America is the most prosperous,
productive, and peaceful nation in the world. Now, we also must seek God and repent from every wicked way that displeases
Almighty God so we can serve Him and have His favor surround us (Psalm 5:12). Let’s remember Jesus’ love on the
Cross as He said, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do.” (Luke 23:34 NKJV)
Today is the day to seek the Lord. Will you follow
Him and do what He commands in the Holy Bible (John 14:21)? And if you haven’t been seeking God and reading your Bible
every day, will you start today? God loves you and He desires to show you right from wrong so you can follow Him and have
a better life.
America’s
government leaders have earnestly sought God in government. At the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin reinforced
Christianity in the government. He said, "… God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to
the ground without His notice is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? … I therefore beg leave to move,
that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly
every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the [Christian] Clergy of the City be requested to officiate
in that service.”
Now, let’s take authority of America and present America back to God as our founding fathers did. We
do this by asking God for America and then dedicating America to God in Jesus' name ... we take authority by seeking
first His kingdom and His righteousness in bold prayer, speaking God’s Word boldly, and actions that glorify God (Matthew
6:33, Acts 4:29, Colossians 3:23).
